AIKEN STANDARD: U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE ANDREWS HOLDS TOWN HALL IN AIKEN AIMED AT REPUBLICANS, INDEPENDENTS
John Boyette, The Aiken Standard
AIKEN — It’s not news that Aiken is a Republican stronghold and has been for decades.
“We are a red city in a red county in a red state,” an Aiken County Republican Party official once said.
Dr. Annie Andrews, though, is undeterred. As the Democratic candidate running for U.S. Senate, she ventured into GOP territory Oct. 23 to hold a town hall that was billed as “Republicans and Independents for Annie.” It was not a fundraising event.
At the Woodside home of Scott and Mary Ruth Singer, Andrews made brief remarks and answered questions from an audience of a few dozen people who gathered in the living room.
Andrews touched on familiar issues including healthcare, the economy and building a brighter future for South Carolinians.
“This campaign is not just for Democrats in South Carolina,” Andrews said. “It’s for independents who feel ready for change. For Republicans like my own dad who don’t recognize the current version of their political party.
“This campaign is for everyone. It’s for people who are more concerned about their bills, about closing rural hospitals, about integrity in Washington, D.C., than they are about their own political party.”
